About Shoemaker-Levy 9 Comet
The comet that collided with Jupiter in July 1994. Captured decades earlier, it was torn into 21 fragments by planetary tides. Discovered in 1993 by Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker and David Levy. The impacts released enormous energy and left Earth-sized scars for months. First directly observed collision of two solar system bodies.
