The comet with the shortest known orbital period, circling the Sun every 3.3 years. Second comet recognized as periodic after Halley. Discovered by Pierre Mechain in 1786, with the orbit computed by Johann Encke. Parent body of the Taurid meteor stream. Has been observed at more than 60 returns.
