About Gaspra
The first asteroid ever encountered by a spacecraft, imaged by Galileo during its Jupiter journey in October 1991. An S-type asteroid covered with more than 600 craters. Its irregular shape resembles a flattened slab. Grooves hint at a shattering impact history. Discovered by Grigory Neujmin in 1916. Named after a town on the Crimean coast.
