Ariel
About Ariel
The brightest of the large moons of Uranus. Its surface features deep rift valleys resembling flooded canyons, evidence of past cryovolcanic resurfacing. Has the youngest surface of any major Uranian moon, with relatively few large craters. Discovered by William Lassell in 1851. Voyager 2 imaged it closely in 1986, still its only spacecraft visit. Named after a sprite in Shakespeares The Tempest.
