About Elara
The second largest member of the Himalia group of irregular moons of Jupiter. Discovered by Charles Perrine in 1905 at Lick Observatory. Takes about 260 days to complete one orbit. Likely a captured asteroid with a grayish surface. Was once classified as an asteroid before its moon status was settled. Named after a lover of Zeus from Greek mythology.
