Iapetus
About Iapetus
The two-toned moon of Saturn, with one hemisphere as dark as coal and the other as bright as snow. The dark region is named Cassini Regio. Has a bizarre equatorial mountain ridge up to 13 km high running three-quarters of the way around it. Discovered by Giovanni Cassini in 1671, who noticed it was only visible on one side of its orbit. The dark material likely drifted in from the moon Phoebe. The third largest moon of Saturn.
